2007 Olympians Break All School Records! The Deanery
Academic Olympics were held on March 9, 2007. Never before in the history of
Academic Olympics have the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade St. Anthony teams all
gone into the championship rounds. The championship rounds were held in the
afternoon in the new theater at Providence and St. Anthony was present for
all the rounds.
Our 6th grade team consisted of Luis Garcia, Hadley Grove, Grace Hess,
Kelci Kidwell, and Rachel Throckmorton. Their first year coaches,
Mrs. Hess and Mrs. Garcia, did a super job getting them ready.
In a hard fought match they came in second. Just wait until next year!
Second year coach Mrs. Lowery, with the help of Mr. Hollkamp,
knew just what they wanted to do with the 7th graders. Having come in second
place last year they knew how to prepare for the games. The team members
were Boon DeMuth, Alex Hollkamp, Kim Hollkamp, Zach Lowery, and
Grant Vance. Each had his or her area of expertise and each was ready to answer
those questions. They got off to a slow start but before noon they had come
into second place. Their championship round was a nail biter. At the end of
the standard 25 questions the score was tied. There were
five added questions. They hung in there and won first place.
The 8th grade coach, Mrs. Diana Huber, has been with this team since
6th grade. They have improved each year. This year they had an unheard of 18
points in one round! Devin Copple, Kara Garcia, Joseph Hess, Chris Jaynes,
and Ben Orem went into the championship round with confidence. They
ended their final year with a first place win.
We are so proud of the players and their couches. Much time, extra studying,
and drilling took place before the final Olympic Games.

| What is Academic
Olympics? Learning is fun! Some of our students are just full of facts
and they love to compete with others to see who really has the most bits of
information. They love to play games like Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit. Thus
began the Academic Olympics teams. St. Anthony has had three teams (one each
for sixth, seventh, and eight grades) since 1999.
Each year we have many students try out in our quizzes to see who will
be on the team. We choose from five to seven students for each team.
They practice with a coach (a volunteer parent) at least once a week
until the date of the playoffs. On that big day they then compete with
other schools from the New Albany
Deanery.
On practice days after school you can hear the eager voices of our
students as they discuss the answers to questions they might get in
competition!
